Komen racers getting ready
The 16th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure takes place Sunday in downtown Toledo at Summit and Monroe streets. The race is run in celebration of Kathryn Ann Thompson and in memory of Leslie Droll. The local honorary chairman is Chrys Peterson, news anchor at WTOL-TV, Channel 11, and race chairman is Julie Gagle. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and is $45. The 5K race starts at 9 a.m., followed by the 5K walk at 9:10 a.m. A family fun 1-mile walk begins at 9:20 a.m. This year the affiliate area grew from 18 counties served in northwest Ohio to 24.
Comedy time
The Comedy Showcase - Night of 100 Stars is scheduled at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Owens Community College, 30335 Oregon Rd., Perrysburg. The night consists of the three nationally recognized impressionists and entertainers. Impressionist Bethany Owen presents comedic parody and musical vocal tributes that include Cher, Tina Turner, and Barbra Streisand. Pete Peterkin's impressions include Sammy Davis, Jr., Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and President Obama. And David Born, an improvisational and stand-up comedian, seems to channel Robin Williams. The Toledo Symphony opens its 66th season with Mahler's Third Symphony at 8 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. Principal conductor Stefan Sanderling leads the TSO with the Bowling Green State University Women's Chorus and the Junior Choral Society of Northwest Ohio. Suzanna Guzman returns as the featured mezzo-soprano. Tickets range from $15 to $50. Information: 419-246-8000.Eagles tribute band
The Valentine Theatre, 400 North Superior St., opens its 11th music season with Hotel California, an Eagles tribute band, performing at 8 p.m. tomorrow. The concert will include such Eagles hits as "Life in The Fast Lane," "Take It Easy," and "Desperado." Tickets are $25, $29, and $35.
Emmy and Golden Globe actor Ed Asner will portray Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the one-man play FDR at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Valentine. Tickets are $33, $43 and $55. Information: 419-242-2787.Parade of Homes
The 2009 HBA Parade of Homes runs Friday through Oct. 4 at scattered sites throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. The parade features homes of all styles, sizes, and price ranges. A group of HBA officers and directors have begun construction on the President's Home that is being built in conjunction with the Parade of Homes and will be available for viewing throughout the parade.Net proceeds from the sale of the home, which is being constructed in Lakeside Villas at Fallen Timbers in Monclova Township, will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northwest Ohio. Show hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Fridays, 1 to 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 1 to 6 p.m. Sundays. Helping women
Women Blessing Women presents the Glass Slipper Review - Making Women's Dreams Come True. The celebration of women in the performing arts is scheduled at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Collingwood Arts Center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd. Featured will be singer Ramona Collins, poet Ophelia Thompson, Blue Moon with Laurie Swyers and Mary Dick, Toledo School for the Arts dancers, singer Theresa Harris, saxophonist Katrina Barnhill, and others. The event will be hosted by Kristian Brown of WTVG-TV, Channel 13. The event benefits the Women Blessing Women endowment fund. Tickets are $18. Information: 419-244-2787.
