A letter mailed by Toledo Public Schools to parents of children who have transferred out of a public school since last year has upset a group representing area charter schools.
The Northwest Ohio Charter School Coalition issued a news release accusing TPS of threatening to take charter school parents to court if they didn't appear at a school district attendance hearing.
In the release, Martin Porter, the director of the Toledo School for the Arts, said his phone "was ringing off the hook," and that staff spent most of Thursday "addressing parents' concerns."
TPS spokesman Patty Mazur said the letter is sent out every year, as state law requires, to all parents who have not notified the district that their children have transferred. This includes parents with children in parochial and private schools.
"There's a phone number on the letter. The parents can call so we can ask them a couple of questions, and it's taken care of," Ms. Mazur said.
Matt Zaleski, administrator of the charter schools coalition, said last night he didn't believe the school district was trying to intimidate the charter school parents."We're not trying to go to war here with TPS. We're simply trying to find out what's going on," he said. "We understand that they're dealing with a state law that requires them to document enrollment. We didn't have this go-around last year, and all of a sudden we have it this year."
