Art and literature combine for fun at Toledo Museum of Art party
Literati!, a party celebrating the connection between art and literature, will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the former Glass Gallery at the Toledo Museum of Art. Attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite fictional character. There will be food, a cash bar, photo booths, and hands-on activities. The event celebrates the museum’s fall exhibitions, three of which highlight the power of words with images. Tickets are $20; free for members. Information: 419-255-8000, ext. 7448.

Arturo Rodriguez and Deborah Orloff, faculty at the University of Toledo, are featured in Transitions and Journeys, Oct. 11 through Nov. 22 in UT’s Center for the Visual Arts next to the Toledo Museum of Art. The gallery will be dark, lit only by the large projections and videos. Orloff layers multiple photographs to invent ambiguous, ethereal landscapes. Rodriguez made shadow puppets and two video installations evocative of dream imagery projected in water. Open reception will be 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 16.

The vessel form is the subject in a show of 35 pieces by 13 seasoned artists through Oct. 31 in the Terhune Gallery at the Fine and Performing Arts Center of Owens Community College. An open reception will be 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow, and a demonstration will be given by ceramicist Karen Roderick-Lingeman at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 in the building’s Room 214. Objects include vases, boxes, pea pods, bowls, mummies, and bottles made of clay, glass, metal, fiber, wood, and found objects.

Neil Frankenhauser will be the featured artist at Inside Angles Custom Framing Gallery, beginning with an open reception, 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 9. In two-and-three-dimensional media, Frankenhauser’s art expresses his love of nature in the tradition of plein air painting. He writes: “In my work, there is no attempt at realistic illusion. As in Van Gogh’s work the tactile quality of the pigment is left to engender its own response and to provide an expressive realism rather than a photographic copy.” The exhibit, at 909 South McCord Rd. in Holland, continues through Oct. 30.

A mosaic art class will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through October at the Wesleyan Church, 17659 Woodburn Ave. in Grand Rapids. Call for artists: Entries can be dropped off for Findlay Art League’s 2009 Juried Show from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 22 and 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 24 at the gallery, 117 West Crawford St. No photography will be accepted. Lynn Rowe Reed’s whimsical art will be displayed Oct. 5 to Nov. 6 in the University of Findlay’s Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion. Reed, of Fort Wayne, has illustrated 13 children’s books including Punctuation Takes a Vacation. She paints with acrylics and gouache; for fun she makes steel sculptures and ceramics. An open reception will be 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 16.
