Concertmaster will lead symphony in Mozart and More opening
The Toledo Symphony will open its Mozart and More concert series with a program of music by Haydn, Dvorak, and Mozart at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Franciscan Center on the Lourdes College campus, Sylvania. Opening the evening will be the Overture to La Clemenza di Tito, Mozart's opera of 1791. Dvorak's Wind Serenade in D Minor will round out the first half of the evening. Haydn's Symphony No. 101 "The Clock" in D Major will be played post intermission.
For this performance, the TSO musicians will perform without a conductor. Concertmaster Kirk Toth will provide leadership from his chair. NEXUS, one of the top percussion groups in the world, will land at Bowling Green State University for an 8 p.m. concert Oct. 8, part of the 2009-2010 Festival Series. Specializing in contemporary music, the Toronto-based group formed in 1971 will perform works by John Cage, Gordon Stout, Steve Reich, and William Cahn in their performance in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center.
A Festival Forum free to the public will begin at 7:15 p.m. in Kobacker prior to the concert.
BGSU students also will have opportunities to interact with NEXUS during the group's three-day residency Oct. 6-8. Among events planned is a free public master class from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 6 in Kobacker.Tickets for the concert are $15-$36 with a $3 service charge per ticket. Cellist Alisa Weilerstein will perform with pianist Inon Barnatan at 8 p.m. Oct. 8 in Hill Auditorium of the University of Michigan, 825 North University Ave., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $10-$50 at www.umstix@umich.edu or 734-764-2538.

The Resurrection Dance Theatre of Haiti, a troupe comprising residents of the St. Joseph Home for Boys in Port-au-Prince, will perform at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Franciscan Center at Lourdes College. Organized in 1985 by Michael Geilenfeld, once a Brother in Mother Theresa's Brothers of Charity, the home provides shelter, care, and education for boys and young men who otherwise would live on the streets.
The Resurrection company tours North America to raise funds for continued service. Tickets for the Sylvania concert are $10 in advance at 419-824-3999, or $12 at the door.
A morning performance is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 8. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door.
Also on the Lourdes campus, the department of music will present its annual Fall Music Showcase from 3-6 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Franciscan Center. Three mini-concerts performed on the hour by students, faculty, staff, and community members will present a thorough view of activities in the college music department. A highlight will be the introduction of Olga Topuzova-Meade, pianist and new college accompanist. A reception will follow the concerts.

Stanley Cowell, the internationally renowned composer/pianist, will be in Toledo for a musical tribute to jazz piano giant Art Tatum at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Owens Community College Center for the Performing Arts. Cowell is chairman of the jazz department at Rutgers University, New Jersey. The program is being presented by the African American Legacy Project of Northwest Ohio. Music From the Manor House, a popular free public concert series, will open at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6, with clarinet students of BGSU professor Kevin Schempf in performance. The Manor House is in Wildwood Preserve Metropark, 5100 West Central Ave.
The Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra will present Octoberfest, its annual fund raiser, starting at 6 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Carranor Hunt and Polo Club, 502 East Second St., Perrysburg. Following cocktails, a German dinner will be served as ensembles from the PSO perform. Games, a silent auction, and outdoor bonfire will follow. The Springfield Schools Foundation will present its Fall Music Sampler with music for piano, bass, and vocalist at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at New Hope Christian Church, 2457 Holloway Rd. (corner of Garden Road) Holland. Performers will be pianist Lynda Dunn, bass Everett Harris, and mezzo-soprano Jodi Jobuck. On the program will be works from classics like Schubert's "Shepherd on the Rock" to contemporary music. The recital is free but donations to the Springfield Schools Foundation will be accepted.
