Body found in Sterling State Park near Monroe

MONROE — An employee at Sterling State Park found what authorities suspect is the body of a rural Newport, Mich., man who went missing in August, authorities said.

The employee was spraying herbicides in a weed-overgrown field about 11 a.m. Wednesday when he found what police believe is the body of Robert McMullin, 48. Also found was a long gun that was within arm's reach of the body, Monroe County sheriff's Detective Joe Hammond said.

Mr. McMullin walked away from home Aug. 4. He was depressed over a medical diagnosis, Detective Hammond said.

An autopsy by the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office is scheduled Thursday.
