Swanton's new police chief was assistant in Sandusky

SWANTON - A retired Sandusky assistant police chief is Swanton Village Council's choice to head its police department.

Gary Lyons, who now resides in Castalia, Ohio, was chosen from six finalists out of a field of 34 applicants, Mayor James Bushong said.

Following closed-door deliberations, council approved Mr. Lyons' appointment last night by a 5-0 vote, with one abstention, without further discussion.

Councilman Pam Moore, whose husband, Ron, had applied for the job, abstained and did not participate in the deliberations.

Mayor Bushong said the new chief will move to Swanton to take the job.

He will be paid $44,000, receive three weeks vacation, and a 50 percent village contribution to his pension instead of the standard 10 percent.

The hiring is subject to a background check, physical examination, and one-year probationary period.

The new chief will replace former Chief Dennis Sattison, who resigned in June but has stayed on as a part-time officer.

Council also accepted the resignation of one of the village's six part-time police officers and approved the termination of another.

Tim Pilot resigned effective Sept. 25, and Steven Mendez, who was on probationary status, was let go effective immediately, officially for "personal reasons."

The mayor declined to elaborate last night on the termination.
