Celebrate Walleye hockey at downtown tailgate party
Celebrate opening day of the inaugural season for Toledo's new ECHL hockey team with a public Walleye tailgate party from 4 to 6 p.m. tomorrow on the north plaza of the Lucas County Arena. Entertainment will be provided by in theory, rock/pop winner of the 2009 Blade Battle of the Bands. Refreshments will be available, and members of the team will be introduced at 4:45 p.m. before they go inside to suit up for the 7 p.m. game against the Florida Everblades.

The inaugural Tam-O-Shanter Life, Home, and Leisure Show will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the event facility at 7060 Sylvania Ave., Sylvania. Featured will be representatives from fashion, salon, fitness, home and garden, and interior design venues. Kathie Smith, Blade food editor, will present cooking demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The event is free, but because of limited seating, tickets are required to the cooking demonstration. They may be obtained at The Blade, Walt Churchill's Supermarkets, Tam-O-Shanter, and the Sylvania Chamber of Commerce, 5632 North Main St.

Elisabeth Von Trapp will be the special guest for the Sound of Music Festival at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Sandusky State Theater, 107 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Granddaughter of Georg Von Trapp, one of the principal characters in the movie The Sound of Music, Elisabeth will perform as well as tell stories of life in her famous family, including her step-grandmother, Maria. •Branson On The Road will be staged at 3 p.m. Sunday in the River Raisin Centre for the Arts, 114 South Monroe St., Monroe. Featured in the show that combines comedy with country, bluegrass, rockabilly and gospel music are Debbie Horton, former lead guitarist for Johnny Cash, songwriter and musician Donnie Wright, and vocalist and bass-fiddle player Brian Capps. Jazz violinist Christian Howes will perform at 9 and 11 p.m. Saturday in Murphy's Place, 151 Water St. Called "arguably the most intriguing young violinist in jazz" by the Minneapolis Tribune, Howes has been voted six times "rising star" violinist in the Downbeat Critics Poll. Literature lovers are invited to a special presentation by New Works Writers Series at 7 tonight in the Ground Level Coffeehouse, 2636 West Central Ave. Actors, under the direction of Imelda Hunt, will give a dramatic reading of The Bluest Eye, a work by Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Toni Morrison, which examines racism and incest in middle America.
