The American Heart Association Go Red Luncheon, "Our Hearts, Our Choice," presented by Macy's and Merck & Co., was Friday at the Crowne Plaza. The main message was that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women.
The event raised about $38,000, and nearly 350 people were in attendance, including those on the program led by emcee Lauren Lowry of WTOL-TV, Channel 11.
Event chairman was Gladeen Roberts, president of ProMedica Continuing Care Services Corp. Speakers were Michelle Nagle, a heart disease survivor, and Marcia Silverman, chairman of the Circle of Red, a group of women who donate $1,000 or more, who talked about being a stroke survivor.
Industry professionals who educated the group were Ameer Kabour, CEO of Toledo Cardiology Consultants; Fayyaz Hashmi of Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates, and Jodi Tinkel, of the University of Toledo Medical Center's cardiovascular medicine. Keynote speaker was Carolyn Gbur of Ohio Heart and Vascular Consultants in Maumee.
Related events were "An Evening of Women's Heart Care" Oct. 6 at the Fifth Third Center with hostess Elizabeth Kollar of the bank. Natalie Cummerow, a heart transplant recipient, spoke.
Another heart-friendly event was at Sophia Lustig Shop Sept. 16 to promote the Circle of Red. The networking opportunity was organized by Mrs. Silverman, Mrs. Roberts, Caroline McMann, a medical community liason and avid volunteer, and Cathy Carlson, president of physican's services and clinical integration at ProMedica.Contact Barbara Hendel at: bhendel@theblade.com or 419-724-6124.
