SWANTON - Winning isn't everything for the Swanton High School football team.
Besides preparing for their own games this fall, team members have led free youth minicamps every Thursday and selected Saturdays since the 2009 season began in late August.
The minicamps were open to children in kindergarten through the second grade and were attended by children from both inside and outside the Swanton school district. Some came from as far as the Otsego district.
"The camps are a way to teach our young men the value of giving back to your community while being a role model for youth," Kyle McElvany, an assistant head football coach, said.
Each camp session lasted an hour, and participants received two-on-one instruction from Swanton football players. Sessions began with a 10-minute warmup, after which campers proceeded through five eight-minute instruction stations covering various aspects of the sport.

Typical subjects included quarterback play, wide-receiver skills, offensive-line technique, running-back play, and tight-end skills, Mr. McElvany said. Each instruction station was led by a senior player from that position group, with other players from that group assisting.
