Wilkowski, Bell debate Monday night and Tuesday

Toledo mayoral candidates Mike Bell and Keith Wilkowski will square off in a televised debate from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday night.

Sponsored by The Blade and WTOL-TV Channel 11, the candidates will be questioned by WTOL news anchors Jerry Anderson and Chrys Peterson and Blade politics writer Tom Troy.

Mr. Bell, 54, is a former city fire chief and state fire marshal.

Mr. Wilkowski, 53, is a lawyer who was elected to city and county offices in the 1980s.

Mr. Bell is running as an independent while Mr. Wilkowski is running as a Democrat.

They were the top vote-getters in the six-candidate Sept. 15 primary, separated by 613 votes, with Mr. Wilkowski on top.

Mr. Bell said earlier this week that voters will be focusing on each candidate’s leadership ability and will get a “good sense of their personalities.”

Mr. Wilkowski said he plans to focus on economic development and job creation as the campaign winds down.

The candidates have made numerous public appearances and faced off in debates on several local television stations.

Some of the debates have been heated as each candidate tried to separate himself from his opponent by focusing on perceived weaknesses in each man’s background.

Tuesday, WTVG-Channel 13 will broadcast a live mayoral debate from 7 to 8 p.m. from Bowsher High School.

The event is free and open to the public.
