BGSU presents operas, concert, talk
Operas by Georg Phillip Telemann and Manuel de Falla, both inspired by Cervantes' novel, Don Quixote, will be presented at 8 p.m. Nov. 6 and 3 p.m. Nov. 8 in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center at Bowling Green State University.
Produced by the BGSU Opera Theater and department of theater and film, the student productions will be presented back to back. In the de Falla work, Master Pedro's Puppet Show, special guests will be the Madcap Puppets of Cincinnati.

Also at BGSU, the Young People's Concerts will continue with "FMB Fever" at 11 a.m. Nov. 7 in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Center. Carol Hayward, director of the Falcon Marching Band, and band members will introduce audience members to the world of the marching band. The program is recommended for children age 5 and older. Tickets, $2 for adults and $1 for children, will be available at the door 30 minutes before the performance.
Guest lecturer Johan Sundberg will discuss the Voice as a Musical Instrument at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Bryan Recital Hall of BGSU's Moore Musical Arts Center. The lecture is free.
•The Toledo Opera will open its 50th anniversary season with performances of Verdi's Falstaff at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 and 13, and 2 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Valentine Theatre. Thomas Conlin will conduct the Toledo Symphony with soloists including Scott Bearden, Barbara Shirvis, Priti Gandhi, Margaret Larrimore, Jamin Flabiano, Jeffrey Tucker, and John Tiranno in a production directed by James Marvel. Percussionist Jonathan Ovalle of the University of Toledo department of music will perform at 3 p.m. Nov. 6 in the Toledo Museum of Art Great Gallery. The recital is free.

The Metropolitan Opera's Live in HD series continues Nov. 7 with a screening of Puccini's tragedy, Turandot, at 1 p.m. in the Maumee 18 Cinema De Lux, 1360 Conant St., Maumee. Andris Nelsons conducts this Franco Zeffirelli production featuring singers Maria Guleghina, Marina Poplavskaya, Marcello Giordano, and Samuel Ramey.
Replay date is 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18. If you missed the Aida simulcast on Oct. 24, the encore screening will be at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11. Tickets are $22 at the box office.

The Moody Flutes Flute Choir will perform "Sound of Silver," at 3 p.m. Sunday in Epworth United Methodist Church, Central Avenue at Valleyview Drive. On the program of classical, Celtic, and traditional music will be the debut of the Silveressence Flute Trio, and a new work for flute and piano, "Duality," written by Tom Worrall for his sister, Connie Alleshouse. The concert is free.

An All Saints Day organ recital and hymn festival is set for 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, 745 Walbridge Ave., in South Toledo. Guest organist will be Michael Burkhardt of Livonia, Mich. Admission is free; a donation will be taken. Refreshments will follow the performance. The Toledo Symphony will present a Neighborhood Concert, "Fall Family Affair," at 3 p.m. Nov. 8 in Blessed John XXIII Catholic Community, 24250 Dixie Hwy., Perrysburg. Conductor Robert Mirakian will lead the orchestra in works by Bernstein, Beethoven, Rossini, and Copland. The second half of the program will include a "Sound of Music" sing-along. Pianist Robert Ballinger will present a University of Toledo Faculty Artist Recital at 4 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Recital Hall of the UT Center for the Performing Arts. The free concert will include music of Mozart, Granados, Brahms, Chopin, and Infante.
Also on the UT campus, the High School Honors Choir will present its annual fall concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 7 in Doermann Theater. Representing talent from high schools in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, the concert will be conducted by John Tyner. Tickets are $3-$5 at the door.

Owens Community College will present its second annual Fall Artist Series, "Creative Noises Live," from Monday to Nov. 18 in its Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Rotunda. Coordinated and promoted by the Music Business I class at OCC, a showcase of student accomplishment from vocal to theater performances is scheduled for 2 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Among the performing groups will be the Owens String Ensemble and Classical Guitar Ensemble, Owens Voices, and jazz, string, and theater ensembles.

Terra Community College will have the Israeli Ethnic Music Ensemble in residence next week for concerts, classes, demonstrations, lectures, and more. The opening event, Celebration Across Cultures, will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the Student Activities Center on the Terra campus, 2830 Napoleon Rd., Fremont. (Maps are available at www.terra.edu.) Admission is free but donations are encouraged.

The St. Lawrence String Quartet will make its University Musical Society debut at 4 p.m. Nov. 8 in Ann Arbor's Rackham Auditorium, 915 East Washington Street.
