West Toledo man killed after leaving accident scene

A West Toledo man was killed Friday night after he drove off after a hit-and-run accident and struck a fire hydrant and utility pole in the 3800 block of South Avenue.

Anthony Darden, 44, of 3121 Cheltenham Ave., was taken to University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly the Medical College of Ohio Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Toledo police said Mr. Darden's pickup truck collided with another vehicle at South Reynolds Road and South about 10:30 p.m.

They said he fled the accident and drove east on South at a high rate of speed. He lost control on the wet pavement and went off the left side of the roadway.

The pickup struck a fire hydrant and utility pole, and rolled over, ejecting Mr. Darden, authorities said. He was not wearing a seat belt.
