Area bankruptcy filings up 1% in month to 844
October bankruptcy filings in northwest Ohio surged past the 800-case barrier for the fourth time this year, rising 1 percent over the same month a year ago, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Toledo.
Last month 844 cases were filed for the 21 counties covered by the court. Since the beginning of the year, 7,652 bankruptcies have been filed, a 28 percent increase from the number in the first 10 months last year.
This year now ranks sixth in number of cases but is likely to move into fifth place once November and December filings are counted. For the year, Chapter 7 liquidation cases amount to 6,937, up 37 percent from last year, and Chapter 13 repayment cases total 695, down 22 percent.
