UT's Church a semifinalist for Jim Thorpe Award

University of Toledo senior safety Barry Church has been named one of 12 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the best defensive back in the nation.

Church is eighth in the Mid-American Conference with 82 tackles this season, with 7.5 tackles for a loss, one interception and three blocked kicks. He has earned first-team All-MAC honors in each of the last three seasons.

Three Jim Thorpe Award finalists will be announced Nov. 23, and they will be invited to attend the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards show on Dec. 10.

Church is also on the Bronko Nagurski Award watch list as the nation's top defensive player.
