Choir observes All Souls Day
The Toledo Diocesan Choir will present an All Souls Day concert with music by Faure, Vaughan-Williams, Hogan, and others at 3 p.m. Nov. 15 in Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd. Paul Monachino, music director at the cathedral, will conduct a choir representing some of the diocesan’s many parishes. A chamber orchestra and organist Mark Koehl will accompany the choir.
Sponsored by Hanneman Family Funeral Homes, the concert is free. Parking is adjacent to the church and school.

The Toledo Symphony will continue its Mozart and More series with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Franciscan Center at Lourdes College in Sylvania. Guest conductor Tito Munoz will lead the orchestra in Mozart’s Overture to the Magic Flute, Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major.
Munoz is assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra, appointed by music director Franz Welser-Most in April 2007.

The Toledo Opera will continue its season-opener production, Verdi’s final opera, Falstaff, at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 and 2 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Valentine Theatre. With Scott Bearden in the title role and Barbara Shirvis and Priti Gandhi as the “merry wives,” the rollicking production opens the 51st season of the Toledo Opera Association.

The Bowling Green State University Opera Theater will present Patience by Gilbert and Sullivan at 2 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Wooster Street Center, 1124 East Wooster St., Bowling Green. The performance will be free to the public.
Also: the BGSU Wind Symphony and Collegiate Chorale will present a concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 14 in Kobacker Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center. Bruss Moss will lead the symphony; Sandra Stegman directs the chorale. Tickets are $10-13 at 419-372-8171 or 1-800-589-2224.

The University of Toledo’s Dorothy MacKenzie Price Piano Series will continue with a free performance by William Wellborn at 3 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Center for the Performing Arts Recital Hall. Wellborn also will present a master class at 10 a.m. Nov. 14 in the CPA.

A free Owens Community College Faculty Chamber Concert with Douglas Mead, oboe; Lynda Dunn, piano, Jodi Jobuck, soprano, and Fred Dais, clarinet, will be presented at noon Tuesday in the theater of the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. On the program will be works by Schubert, Mozart, Weber, Chopin, and Debussy.

Bowling Green State University faculty pianist Robert Satterlee will perform at 3 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Great Gallery of the Toledo Museum of Art. Guest flutist will be Marcia Henry of the Peoria (Ill.) Symphony. The concert is free.

Pianist and teacher Jeffery Weaver will speak on audition techniques for the Toledo Piano Teachers Assocation at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, 3620 Heatherdowns Blvd. The public is invited to this free event.

Music from Bowling Green at the Manor House, a free public recital series at Wildwood Preserve Metropark, will continue at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday with oboe music by students of BGSU faculty oboist Jacqueline Leclair.

Trumpeter Charles Saenz and organist Pam Davis will perform music by Tomasi, Bach, Viviani, Hovhaness, and Hassell in a 4 p.m. recital Nov. 15 at Community of Christ Lutheran Church, 3517 Finzel Rd., Whitehouse. For more information, call 419-877-0607.

The University of Michigan Opera Theatre will present Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12, 8 p.m. Nov. 13 and 14, and 2 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Power Center in Ann Arbor. The production will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. Robert Swedberg of the U of M faculty has directed the opera, which will be conducted by Kenneth Kiesler. BGSU composer Mikel Kuehn has won the Aaron Copland Award, a residency based in the Hudson River home of the great American composer. Kuehn is one of 8 to 10 emerging American composers invited to stay at Copland House in New York for three weeks or more. The program is an official project of the White House “Save America’s Treasures” initiative. Kuehn, who also runs the BGSU MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music, was selected from some 110 applicants and will be in residence in May, 2010.
