School bus driver cited after Toledo boy is hurt
A Toledo Public Schools bus driver was cited by police in a North Toledo traffic incident that injured a 14-year-old Woodward High School student yesterday, authorities said.
Keion Johnson was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening after he was struck by a school bus about 8:10 a.m. at Lagrange Street and East Central Avenue, police said.
Travis Grant, 38, the driver, told police the boy did not look in his direction before running into a side of the bus, Officer Steve Skeels said. Mr. Grant was cited for failure to control/attention to operation.
The boy was running in a crosswalk across Lagrange when he was struck by the bus, which was turning from eastbound Central onto northbound Lagrange, Officer Skeels said.
Toledo Public Schools Superintendent John Foley said the district will "be investigating and will take appropriate actions." Mr. Grant has driven a TPS bus for five years. He has had two traffic violations since then, according to Toledo Municipal Court records.
In July, 2008, he was found guilty of driving without a license earlier that year. A $25 fine was suspended. In December, 2008, he was found guilty of driving an unsafe vehicle the month before. A $50 fine was suspended.
