Three Toledo councilmen will host district meetings this month regarding the city's switch to automated refuse and recycling collection.
A representative from the city's solid waste division will take question about the new garbage plan.
Toledo's switch to automated refuse pickup will get rolling during the third week of November. The 180,000 new trash and recycling containers - which cost the city $9.67 million to buy two for every household - will arrive in the city beginning Nov. 16, when locally hired workers are to start assembling the carts.
District 3 Councilman Mike Craig will host a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the East Toledo Family Center, 1020 Varland Ave.
District 2 Councilman D. Michael Collins will host a meeting 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus, formerly the Medical College of Ohio, 3000 Arlington Ave., in the Health Education Building, Room 100.
District 5 Councilman Tom Waniewski will host a meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 19 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4030 Douglas Rd.Delivery of the new containers will begin Nov. 30 and go through the spring.
Megan Robson, spokesman for Mayor Carty Finkbeiner, said the trash and recycling containers will be city property and will be connected to the residence address through the embedded chips.
A homeowner or tenant does not take the container with them when changing residences. The container is to stay at the original location, and the owner or tenant will assume responsibility for the container at their new residence.
A gray container will be for trash and a blue one will be for all recyclable material. Residents will get two 96-gallon containers unless they had requested 64-gallon or 48-gallon containers.
Council on July 7 agreed to spend $12.2 million to buy 40 automated garbage trucks.
Automated collection will begin in December, when the city plans to readjust its collection routes.
Residents who have large items for pickup must call the city at 419-936-2515 at least one day in advance of collection day.
