COLUMBUS - Ohio will be one of the first states to follow strict new national curriculum standards being coordinated among 48 states, education officials said this week.
The effort called Common Core is developing "fewer, clearer, and higher" curriculum benchmarks that should help boost student performance, said Stan Hefner, associate state schools superintendent.
They will apply to grades kindergarten through 12.
The standards are designed to help students learn more about fewer subjects while also being matched to what is expected in college and the workplace.
They also set out to eliminate a lot of "reteaching" that occurs in several grades, said Brad Findell, an administrator with the state education department.
No longer would struggling students in the sixth grade be working on third-grade math, he said.Outlines of the Common Core English and math standards are expected to be ready in December, with final versions likely to follow in January.
Because of the new standards, Ohio has dropped a plan to release its own English and math draft guidelines this month.
The education department later this month will release its proposed standards for social studies and science because there are no Common Core standards.
