GILBOA, Ohio — An 80-year-old Ottawa, Ohio, woman was struck and killed by a minivan when she was standing on a road blowing leaves into a ditch, authorities said.
Mae Baldrich was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 5:40 p.m. Friday on Old State Rt. 224 near Putnam County Road 5, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Mrs. Baldrich was struck by a minivan driven by Beth Thain, 41, of Gilboa, east on the road.
Thick smoke from the burning leaves was blowing across the highway, troopers at the patrol's Lima post said.
Troopers said they believed Mrs. Baldrich did not hear the oncoming traffic because she was wearing noise-reducing ear protection. The crash remained under investigation.
