2006 Chevrolet Aveo
Base List Price: $9,455
After the demise of the minicompact Metro following the 2001 model year, Chevrolet had no true entry-level passenger car in its lineup. Compact Cavaliers were the company’s smallest models.
That omission was remedied for 2004 with a pair of Aveos. The new subcompact sedan and four-door hatchback were promoted as high in value, fun to drive and dependable.
For 2005, a Special Value model and an LT edition joined the LS trim level. All three versions remain in the 2006 lineup.
Seat-mounted side-impact airbags go into 2006 models, and dual-stage front airbags have a passenger-sensing system. Cruise control and remote keyless entry are newly available. The retuned Aveo suspension includes a thicker front stabilizer bar. Coat hooks are now mounted on the rear assist grips, and the front-seat headrests can tilt.
GM Daewoo Auto and Technology in South Korea manufactures these cars. Competitors include the Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio and Toyota Echo.
2006 Chevrolet Cobalt
Base List Price: $13,900
Built on General Motors’ Delta architecture and launched for 2005, the front-wheel-drive subcompact Cobalt comes in sedan and coupe body styles. Most Cobalts initially used a 145-horsepower four-cylinder, but a 205-hp supercharged engine went into the SS Supercharged coupe.
Eight versions are offered for 2006, including two additional SS editions. Sedans come in LS, LT, LTZ and SS trim levels; coupes are offered in LS, LT, SS and SS Supercharged editions. Distinct interiors and wheels help in differentiating the models. Both new offerings for 2006, the basic SS coupe and sedan get 17-inch wheels, an FE3 performance suspension and a 171-hp 2.4-liter engine with variable valve timing.
2006 Chevrolet Corvette
Base List Price: $43,800
A shorter sixth-generation Corvette that was more powerful than ever before and benefited from upgrades in handling, acceleration and braking debuted for 2004. A hatchback coupe went on sale first, and a convertible followed.
Called “the most aerodynamically efficient Corvette ever” by Chevrolet, the current coupe has a 0.286 coefficient of drag. Chief engineer Dave Hill said it’s also “more competition-influenced.”
A six-speed-automatic transmission that operates via paddle shifters and a new three-spoke steering wheel are available on 2006 models. The new transmission incorporates two electronically controlled automatic modes: Drive and Sport. Dual-stage frontal airbags incorporate passenger-sensing technology.
For 2006, Chevrolet is launching a high-performance Z06 coupe that unleashes a 505-horsepower V-8 engine.
2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Base List Price: $21,330
Despite the Monte Carlo’s NASCAR racing heritage, recent versions of the midsize coupe haven’t been produced with V-8 engines. But that’s changed for the 2006 model year, as the reworked Monte Carlo gets a small-block V-8 for its SS edition.
The Monte Carlo also gains revised suspension systems and a greater track width. Chevrolet’s related Impala sedan gets similar modifications, including the V-8 option, for 2006. Four trim levels are available: LS, LT, LTZ and SS. Monte Carlos roll on a new group of 16- , 17- and 18-inch wheels. The car’s interior features improved seat upholstery stitching, low-gloss instrument-panel components and jewellike dashboard detailing.
Base models use a new 3.5-liter V-6, while uplevel versions get a 3.9-liter V-6. SS models benefit from a new LS4 5.3-liter V-8 that features Displacement On Demand technology, which allows the engine to transition between four- and eight-cylinder operation. Chevrolet says this system promises fuel-economy improvements of as much as 12 percent.
2006 Chevrolet Silverado
Base List Price: $18,190
A hybrid-powertrain version of the Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup truck became available to retail customers in select states in the 2005 model year and goes on sale nationally for 2006. Chevrolet also added a high-output 310-horsepower, 5.3-liter V-8 for 2005, which is available on the four-wheel-drive 1500 extended-cab model.
Light-duty 2006 models get a fresh front end with a power dome hood. A new VortecMAX Performance Package that includes a 345-hp V-8 can enhance towing capabilities. Quadrasteer four-wheel steering is no longer offered.
Engine choices include a 4.3-liter V-6 and four V-8s. GMC’s similar Sierra pickup uses comparable powertrains.
The Silverado 1500 provides a half-ton rating, the 2500HD has a three-quarter-ton rating, and the 3500 features a one-ton rating. A 1500HD model also is available, though only in Crew Cab form. Heavier-duty models can be equipped with a Duramax diesel V-8 or a big-block 8.1-liter gasoline V-8.
One 1500-series model, the Silverado SS (Super Sport) performance truck, features a high-performance chassis, 20-inch tires and high-output 345-hp, 6.0-liter V-8. A lowered ride height and what Chevrolet calls a “trim, aggressive stance” differentiate the SS from other models in the lineup. A two-wheel-drive SS joined the four-wheel-drive version in mid-2005.
2006 Chevrolet Suburban
Base List Price: $36,965
Even though it’s not the largest sport utility vehicle on the U.S. market, the Suburban definitely warrants a king-size designation. Available with two- or four-wheel drive, Suburbans are built on the company’s full-size Silverado pickup truck platform, which is also used for the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs. Suburbans come in half-ton (1500) and three-quarter-ton (2500) capacity ratings.
An LTZ model with a 6.0-liter V-8, all-wheel drive, a Z55 suspension and 20-inch wheels joins the 2006 Suburban lineup. Essentially an offshoot of the LT trim level, the LTZ features a revised chrome-bar grille, monochromatic bumpers, chrome assist steps and leather seating surfaces.
Additionally, a tire-pressure-monitoring system is now standard on all Suburbans, and catalytic converters on 1500 models have been relocated.
Quadrasteer four-wheel steering is no longer available on 2006 models. General Motors’ StabiliTrak electronic stability system is offered on half-ton Suburbans equipped with the 5.3-liter V-8.
