2006 Dodge Dakota
Base List Price: $20,010

“Bigger, bolder and tougher.” That’s how Dodge described its Dakota pickup truck, as redesigned for 2005, promising best-in-class horsepower, torque and towing capabilities. A V-6 is standard, but the Dakota can be fitted with either of two V-8s. Club Cab and Quad Cab models are offered. Dakotas are available with rear- or four-wheel drive in three trim levels: ST, SLT and Laramie.

Four new editions debut for 2006: TRX, TRX4 Off-Road, R/T and Night Runner. A sunroof is now optional for Quad Cab pickups, Club Cabs have full-swing rear doors, and automatic-transmission modification promises improved gas mileage with the V-6. A new Alpine SoundBox stereo system is optional.

2006 Dodge Stratus

Base List Price: $20,465

Stratus sedans for 2006 come in SXT and R/T trim levels. Interiors have been freshened. Three special value packages are available for the SXT sedan: Leather, Chrome and Protection, the latter including antilock brakes, traction control and side curtain-type airbags.

The R/T sedan’s exterior appearance has been updated for 2006, courtesy of body-colored ground effects and a racing-inspired rear spoiler that incorporates magnesium wings. Leather-trimmed bucket seats, antilock brakes, a performance suspension, 17-inch wheels and a 3-inch exhaust tip are standard on the R/T.

Chrysler offers a similar Sebring sedan, along with a convertible that’s not available with a Stratus badge.

2006 Dodge Viper SRT10

Base List Price: $81,895

A new, hotter-than-ever edition of Dodge’s high-performance Viper went on sale as a 2003 model. The Viper SRT10’s all-aluminum V-10 grew from 8.0 to 8.3 liters in displacement, yielding 500 horsepower and 525 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed-manual transmission sends all that force to 19-inch rear tires (18-inch tires are installed in front). The racing-style chassis incorporates a fully independent suspension and massive brakes.

The current model was initially produced only as a two-passenger convertible, but a coupe joins the lineup for the 2006 model year. Finished in Viper Blue with white racing stripes, the solid-roofed model features a “double-bubble” roof, wraparound taillamps and a special windshield surround. Dodge claims the Viper coupe can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. Two new wheel options are also available for 2006.

More than any other model on the market, the Viper SRT10 represents serious, traditional, American performance centered on a big engine and a lack of frills. Even so, today’s Detroit-built Vipers can be equipped with a number of comfort and convenience features. Loosely patterned after the Shelby Cobras of the 1960s and the Chrysler Hemi-powered Cunningham racers of the 1950s, the first Viper went on saleas a 1992 model.
