2006 Ford Escape Hybrid
Base List Price: $26,900

The first hybrid-powered SUV reached dealerships in the 2005 model year. The Escape Hybrid is Ford’s first entrant into the hybrid segment. Delivering its power to an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, the Escape Hybrid can run on its four-cylinder gasoline engine, electric power only (for short distances) or a combination of the two. At stoplights, the gas engine shuts itself off.

Ford’s eCVT system allows the gas engine and electric traction motor to work together. The eCVT unit actually contains the electric motor. The battery pack sits below the rear floor carpet and delivers 39 kilowatts of power.

For 2006, a Premium Package with a monochromatic appearance in a choice of five colors is available. The option group includes premium leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, a Reverse Sensing System, a hybrid energy display and a navigation system.

2006 Ford Explorer

Base List Price: $26,530

Ford has reworked its midsize sport utility vehicle for the 2006 model year, dubbing it “the best Explorer ever” and “the most powerful.” Mercury has given its related Mountaineer similar treatment for 2006.

In its new form, the 4.6-liter V-8, with three valves per cylinder, generates 292 horsepower — a gain of 53 hp — and drives a new six-speed-automatic transmission. Ford claims significantly improved fuel economy and emissions for the 2006 model, and towing capacity can reach 7,300 pounds. A V-6 version with a five-speed-automatic transmission remains available.

Four trim levels are still offered: XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer and top-of-the-line Limited. New options include 18-inch chrome-clad wheels, a navigation system and a power-folding 50/50-split third-row seat. Later in the 2006 model year, factory-installed Sirius Satellite Radio will be available.

When properly equipped, a V-6-equipped Explorer can tow up to 5,390 pounds, versus 7,300 pounds in models with V-8 power. Ford’s AdvanceTrac electronic stability system with Roll Stability Control is standard on all models.

2006 Ford GT

Base List Price: TBA

Ford calls it the “American supercar reborn.” Initially named the GT40 after a renowned Ford racecar of the 1960s, the supercar was renamed GT as it went into production.

The original model was built for the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race, where it beat the world’s best racecars in endurance competition — finishing first, second and third in 1966.

“Essential elements of the original — including the stunning low profile and midmounted American V-8 engine — continue in this latest interpretation of the classic,” said J Mays, Ford’s vice president of design. Ford said every line and curve “is a unique interpretation of the original.”

A limited-edition Tungsten Grey coupe for 2006 commemorates Ford’s 1966 victories at Le Mans.

2006 Ford Ranger

Base List Price: $14,450

Ford continues to give compact-pickup buyers plenty of choices. Rangers are available with a four-cylinder or a choice of two V-6s, and with either a manual transmission or a five-speed automatic. Options range from skid plates and Bilstein shock absorbers to earth-shattering audio systems. Mazda markets a related B-Series.

Two configurations were added for 2005: regular-cab XLT models with a 7-foot cargo box and the Ranger Edge, which could be equipped with a Tremor MP3 audio and wheel package. Aimed at young buyers, the sporty Edge edition conveyed the assertive look and ride height of a four-wheel-drive Ranger at a lower price.

The Edge has been renamed Ranger Sport for 2006. Design changes for all models this year include revised bumper colors, a horizontal grille insert, fender flares, clear-lens parking lamps, new taillamps and fog lamps, and a 9-inch Ford oval on the grille and tailgate. Two-tone paint goes on FX4/Off-Road and Level II models. FX4/Off-Road pickups are now available in two- or four-door SuperCab form.

Trim levels include XL, STX, XLT, Sport, FX4 and FX4 Level II. Ford’s four-cylinder engine is now standard in XL and XLT two-door SuperCab 4x2 models. New color choices for 2006 include Screaming Yellow, Torch Red and Redfire. Options now include two 15-inch forged aluminum wheels and body-colored side moldings.
