2006 Hyundai Accent
Base List Price: TBA

Hyundai’s smallest model earns a substantial redesign for 2006. Now in its third generation, the compact four-door sedan comes in a single GLS trim level.

Larger in every dimension, the 2006 Accent is 3 inches taller and its driver’s seat is 2 inches higher. Hyundai says the redesigned Accent has the most interior volume for a sedan in its class. Six airbags are standard.

A new 1.6-liter four-cylinder with continuously variable valve timing produces 110 horsepower. Power rack-and-pinion steering is standard. Robert F. Cosmai, president and chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, said the Accent’s interior features an upscale two-tone color scheme.

The car goes on sale in fall 2005. It includes 24-hour roadside assistance for five years. Kia’s Rio is similar to the Accent and also was redesigned for 2006, but the two companies claim their models differ substantially. Hyundai owns Kia.

2006 Hyundai Sonata

Base List Price: $17,895

The redesigned 2006 Sonata is Hyundai’s first American-made product, which will be manufactured at a new plant in Montgomery, Ala.

The Sonata offers “contemporary style, class-above roominess, segment-leading safety features and outstanding value,” said Robert F. Cosmai, president and chief executive office of Hyundai Motor America. He said the car has been developed with American consumers in mind.

The sedan is larger in every dimension and offered with four-cylinder or V-6 power. The restyled Sonata’s enhanced interior pushes the car from midsize to full-size status; its primary rivals, however, include such midsize sedans as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Hyundai claims the Sonata is quieter than either of those models. Sonatas come in GL, GLS and top-of-the-line LX trim levels.
