Hefflin arraigned, free on bond
BLADE STAFF REPORTS
A junior cornerback with the University of Toledo football team who was charged after a bar fight Sunday was released on his own recognizance after an arraignment yesterday in Toledo Municipal Court.
Brandon L. Hefflin, 22, of 3764 Hill Ave., was charged with one count each of escape, assault, resisting arrest, and criminal trespass. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 14.
Toledo police arrived at The Top Shelf bar, 135 South Byrne Rd., and found security leading Hefflin outside. He was told several times not to be on the premises as he had assaulted several people inside and fought with the bouncers. When officers asked him to leave, he spit on them, police said.
As Hefflin was being handcuffed, he kept pulling away from police and didn't respond to their commands. A woman in the bar told police that Hefflin punched her on both sides of her face in the bar because she was in the way as he was trying to get to another bar patron.
Hefflin had to be carried to an ambulance, which he refused to get into, and was taken to the Medical College of Ohio Hospitals. At the hospital, he threw a portable urinal at an officer and tried to flee police. Tests conducted at the hospital showed he had a blood alcohol level of 0.28, nearly three times the legal limit in Ohio, police said.
Toledo coach Tom Amstutz, on the road recruiting, said he has not talked to Hefflin, he is not very familiar with the incident, and will deal with it when he returns to town.
