A twin-engine Grand Aire cargo jet crashed more than a mile short of Toledo Express Airport this afternoon, killing three people.
Authorities said the plane careened steeply into thick woods, clipping trees before burrowing into the ground in Oak Openings Preserve Metropark, located just south of Airport Highway (State Rt. 2) near Girdham Road in Swanton Township.
The jet, a Dassault Falcon 20, was approaching the airport from the west when it went down just before 2 p.m., shortly after air traffic controllers at the airport reported they lost radar contact with the plane.
Fire and police crews from Swanton, Swanton Township, Springfield Township, Monclova Township, the Ohio Air National Guard, the Ohio Highway Patrol, and the Lucas County Sheriff's Department responded.
"It came down at a steep angle [and] it clipped the trees. It wasn't pretty," said Lt. George Jutze, commander of the Ohio Highway Patrol's Toledo post.
Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were expected on the scene tonight to begin their investigation.
