In the summertime, Jacksonville is a hot town - too hot
When you tell people you are from Michigan when you travel you can expect remarks about our weather. Last week in Florida was no exception. One person asked me if we still had snow. A curious woman wanted to know if I had to buy summer clothes in Florida, and another wisecracker figured I must really be enjoying the high temperatures in Florida compared to what we had back home. Wrong! I hated it.

Interesting trips are just around the corner
You know my travel policy: Get in the car and go. Just do it, alone or with someone, or even with a carload of friends and family. There is much to see and do not far from home, and other than the gas prices messing with our budgets, most travel is uplifting and therapeutic.

New appliances are cause for celebration - and cleaning
Spring improvements to the Farm House here at Posey Lake ran hot and cold, serving as reminders that old habits die hard.

Young Eagle Scout inspires patriotism
This is the time of year for invitations from family and friends celebrating milestones in their lives. There are graduations, showers, and wedding anniversary invitations in May, and greater numbers can be expected in June as the wedding season gets into full swing.

For one Toledoan, entertaining and volunteering are in the bag
You may think you have too many tote bags and purses, but in Jeanene Pifer's world there is never enough. Would you believe 600 and still counting - and shopping for more? The hundreds of people who have been the Toledoan's audiences believe it because they have seen 40 and more totes from her collection in her Toledo's Other Bag Lady shows.

Coffee or tea? Not me, unless it's at breakfast
If you absolutely can't survive without a cup of coffee or tea in a restaurant before you get home, then go ahead and spend another $2 or more.

15 and counting: Dogs have always been a part of the family
I admit to keeping a closer watch on news and photos of Bo in the White House than on the President. Being a dog lover all my life, I find the Portuguese water dog more interesting than day-to-day politics.

Lowly pennies add up to a valuable lesson
A penny saved is a penny earned. Penny-wise and pound-foolish. A penny for your thoughts.

Restaurant owner gets Limbaugh on the line
This gypsy at heart is primed and ready for short trips not far from home. Let's face it, we have been faithful to home and hearth through a miserable winter, and now it's time to venture out.

Gracie’s sandwiches still favorites
Once upon a time in the annals of Toledo’s culinary history, the Urban Club in the Toledo Museum of Art neighborhood was a one- of-a-kind place for great food and conversation with Gracie Schutt, the hostess/owner.

Nutrition labels offer food for thought
Imagine an Easter basket filled with celery, carrots, an apple, an orange, and a bunch of grapes. While such an arrangement would appeal to Peter Rabbit or may work well on a ladies' spring luncheon table, it would bring disappointment, tears, and perhaps even a screaming temper tantrum from children and adults.

Signs of spring are just outside the door
Finally, my dog, Digby, can stay outdoors most of the day without shivering from the cold or walking through snow. The kitten that survived winter on the front porch is sunbathing on one of the bales of straw that served as a warm igloo.

Detroit native retires after long Navy career
I suppose it’s a little late to think about joining the U.S. Navy. To turn a phrase, I missed the boat long ago. But an afternoon at a Navy function last weekend made me think how different life could have been if I had signed my name on an application form at a recruiting station and passed the rigorous physical.

Adrian gathering was a walk down memory lane
ADRIAN - The old hometown got a jump-start on spring, if not literally, then at least in spirit and theme when eight downtown businesses in Adrian rallied around a Wine About Winter event to lure customers downtown with wine, cheese, and art.

New Orleans at Mardi Gras: You have to see it to believe it
NEW ORLEANS - No matter how many pictures you have seen or how many stories you have heard about the crowds, noise, and parades on Fat Tuesday here in the Big Easy, seeing is believing. The celebration on the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of fasting for Lent is wild. Thousands of people get into the carnival spirit, crowding the streets from early morning until the stroke of midnight.

Little Hawaiian church symbolizes the spirit of the islands
LAHAINA, Maui - There was no way to capture on film the beauty of the sky after sunset tonight. Within seconds after the sun sank behind the island of Lanai, vivid pink ribbons mingling with white clouds painted an incredible picture. Those of us who make sure to be home by sunset don't bother to get out the camera.

Maui's expensive, but its beauty is free
How forgetful am I, anyway? I don't remember prices on Maui being so high. Good grief, $4.29 for a can of soup and $4.71 for two papayas. I thought they harvested them here by the bushel, like we do apples back home.

Georgia's Jekyll Island hospital has hard-shelled patients
A nice gesture for Griffin, Tinkerbell, Simone, and Pumpkin would be to send them get-well cards. But it wouldn't do much good. Besides, the cards would get waterlogged when delivered.
