Tastetoledo is the place to celebrate
Celebrate Independence Day with The Blade's Red White & KABOOM Fireworks and tastetoledo. The event will be held from noon to midnight Friday and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday on the downtown Toledo riverfront, and will showcase food from 13 area restaurants. There also will be a specialty beer garden and a wine garden.

Bananas Foster Sundaes are cool treats
I made my first batch of homemade ice cream of the year over Memorial Day weekend. It was banana pecan made with frozen ripe bananas, cream, and brown sugar, and flavored with a cinnamon stick steeped in water. It had a very banana-y taste, but was a good way to use up ripe fruit.

Grilling in the Midwest
Think about grilling traditions in the Midwest. There's grilling and there's barbecuing. In the Midwest, we are known for grilling. There's no regional barbecue sauce that rivals the dry spice rubs of Memphis or the mops of North Carolina, unless you count the cherry-inspired glazes and sauces of Michigan.

ZOOtoDO event to showcase Toledo area restaurants
Guests will sample foods from more than 50 of the area's finest restaurants and caterers at ZOOtoDO from 6 p.m. to midnight June 12 at the Toledo Zoo. The journey begins at 6 p.m. when guests are greeted with a glass of champagne for a reception near the Africa! exhibit. At 7:30 p.m. they may cross the bridge to the zoo's historic side for music, food, and fun.

Sweet thoughts on beverages
Before the 1960s, sucrose was used almost exclusively to sweeten soft drinks and other products, but the use of less expensive high-fructose corn syrup increased over the years. It now accounts for half the sugars used in the United States, according to Chow Line, an online publication of Ohio State University.

Port Clinton chili cook-off aids Ottawa County
The 12th annual Ohio State Chili Cook-Off will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Catawba Flea Market, 5335 SE Catawba Rd., Port Clinton. Classes, food for children
