ATT: Fall gala benefits area outreach organizations
The ninth annual Fall Gala Gathering for nearly 30 nonprofit organizations was Nov. 14 at Gladieux Meadows. Approximately $70,000 was raised for the groups this year, according to event chairmen Ed and Linda Reiter and Jim and Cheryl Oedy.

The Indian summer weather reminded me of all of the great golf events we had this summer and fall. Most were for charity, some were just for fun, and many folks were still on the links yesterday enjoying the sun. There is time to play before the snow flies, and even then, die-hard golfers bundle up and play right on through.

Around the Town: Shopping for charity
Shopping in the name of charity was the scene last month during the annual Fall Trunk Show and Luncheon presented by the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County Alliance at Sylvania Country Club. Vendors included Sheffield Road, Pampered Chef, the Toledo Zoo Gift Shop, plus assorted jewelry, purses and scarves.

On the Town: Under the spell
Brewing up all kinds of fun were several Halloween parties, and many, no doubt, included on the menu Vampire Merlot and the Velvet Devil Merlot, which were featured wines at The Vineyard. ON Halloween, The Toledo-Lucas County Library downtown hosted a Little Boo Bash for free. The bash included carnival-style games, arts and crafts, and more.

On the Town: Gem of all balls
Center stage at the Crowne Plaza Saturday night was the 49th Annual Sapphire Ball to benefit the Toledo Opera Association. Sponsors were Block Communications Inc., Healthcare REIT, the Ashley Group, and the Gorski family. Ladies were lovely in gowns and gents debonair in tuxedos.

An event from the heart
The American Heart Association Go Red Luncheon, "Our Hearts, Our Choice," presented by Macy's and Merck & Co., was Friday at the Crowne Plaza. The main message was that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women.

On the Town: Arena parties ice-breakers
It was history in the making as the new Toledo Walleye hockey team broke the ice Friday night in the new Lucas County Arena. Fireworks exploded as the team was introduced, then it was time to play some hockey. That is, after Ramona Collins sang the national anthem. Even some walleye, the fishy kind, were thrown on the ice before the third period.

ATT: Country Garden Club trunk show continues
The Holiday Trunk Show presented by the Country Garden Club opened Monday night with a preview party, and Tuesday with Gals Night Out. The show, started in 1987, will run through today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Carranor Hunt and Polo Club in Perrysburg. Lunch is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Planned Parenthood celebrates 70 years
The 70th anniversary of Planned Parenthood of Northwest Ohio was celebrated Thursday at Navy Bistro with "The Art of Prevention" art show and fund-raiser. Anastasia Hanson, the center's local advisory council chairman and the evening's mistress of ceremonies, introduced CEO Lisa Perks, who gave an overview of the center's accomplishments.

On the last day of summer, we're looking back at reunions and looking ahead to kickoffs for fall fund-raising events. Raceway Park with Chicks for Charity hosted “Harness the Hope” Saturday night at the park. The third annual event for The Victory Center is part of the Mildred Williams International Series Raffles, named in memory of one of the first female harness racing drivers.

United Way of Greater Toledo's annual leadership recognition event presented by Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick was Sept. 3 during a Mud Hens game at Fifth Third Field. It was for donors of the Greater Toledo area - Lucas, Wood, and Ottawa counties - who give $1,000 or more.

Ex-UT chief, wife in town for a visit
Guess who was back in T-town? Yep, Toledo has that kind of draw. Dan Johnson, former president of the University of Toledo, and his wife, Elaine, were here for a brief visit from their home in Dubai. They have been in the United States for nearly two months, visiting family all over the country, including a trip to Lakeside, Ohio.

Warm weather fun continues here in T-town, which means enjoying the outdoors whenever possible. TENNIS in Toledo is smashing. The City of Toledo Singles Championship was Saturday afternoon at the Toledo Tennis Club in Ottawa Hills. Champions are Zorana George, who defeated Morgan Delp in the women’s division, and Todd Dominiak, who defeated Kyle Collette in the men’s division.

It's the 150th anniversary of the Oliver House near downtown Toledo on Broadway. Part of Toledo's nightlife for more than a century, the pre-Civil War hotel tended to wounded soldiers during the Spanish-American War, said owners Pat and Jim Appold.

What a beautiful week. The 25th annual Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic presented by Kroger was another success with great weather and great golf as volunteers and sponsors joined together to make it all happen again. And the biggest volunteer, tournament host Jamie Farr, was right in the thick of it all, rising early and going to bed late, all in the line of duty.
