Taste after taste and course after course, the luncheon menu at the home of Janet George was a tribute to the harvest season and happy times and people from Toledo culinary memories. >>

Michigan is full of beans - and very proud of it
There are a number of ways to demonstrate loyalty to your home state. In Michigan we believe the "mitten" state is ideally bordered by four Great Lakes, each of which is great on individual merits. Granted, the weather is not always ideal but when I travel to warmer climates and claim Michigan as home, it ruffles my feathers when people utter "brrrr," assuming it is always cold here. >>

Test of 10 frozen meals produces some winners, losers
As a self-appointed consumer panel of one I would like to share the evaluations on 10 frozen dinners that went from freezer to microwave in minutes. In this arm of today’s cooking and eating agenda, there is no peeling, chopping, mashing, measuring, and best of all, no pots and pans to wash. >>

Every day should be Flag Day
Twitter, Facebook, YouTube. Am I missing a good time online for lack of interest in the hot new electronic chatter and blogging choices? Wading through a long list of e-mails is time-consuming enough, and often more boring than informative. >>

Take time to enjoy the pleasures of our region before summer's gone
After tomorrow August will be gone, and summer won't be far behind. It will be more difficult to bring the curtain down on summer 2009 than in most years because of the near-perfect weather we have experienced. Many times in the past several weeks, when the days have been temperate and the nights cool, I have told friends "this is a Maui day." >>

Class gatherings taking a sad turn
The monthly high school class meetings have moved into a new chapter in life, one that we have come to accept just as we did when we were beginning another school year in September and studying toward graduation. >>

Birthday is time for thought
Waking up to thunder and lightning on your birthday could be considered a bad omen. But rainy days are good thinking days, and on a birthday only good thoughts are the order of the day, beginning with your horoscope. >>

Hanging up on new cell phone
If I could just figure out how to use my new cell phone with all the latest bells and whistles, I could join the legions of text-messagers. The phone certainly is handsome, with its bright blue case and a keyboard that slips out slicker than a whistle. But why did I select this model when all I need to do is send and receive messages vocally? >>

Daily life can be fascinating
Writing is all about sharing information learned through meeting people, the mail, or just plain observing. With that introduction, today's column is a collection of items I found interesting in my daily life and thought that you might too. I appreciate hearing from readers through both forms of mail, time-honored snail mail and e-mail which increases each week. >>

Cook up signature dishes for the Mud Hens and Walleye
While driving through downtown Toledo recently, the new look of the city was overwhelming and my heart pounded with pride. I have not lived in Toledo since I moved back home to Michigan in 1995, but there is rarely a week that I don't make the drive on U.S. 223 from Adrian to Toledo because it will always be my main base, with treasured memories of The Blade food beat and friends. >>

In the summertime, Jacksonville is a hot town - too hot
When you tell people you are from Michigan when you travel you can expect remarks about our weather. Last week in Florida was no exception. One person asked me if we still had snow. A curious woman wanted to know if I had to buy summer clothes in Florida, and another wisecracker figured I must really be enjoying the high temperatures in Florida compared to what we had back home. Wrong! I hated it. >>

Interesting trips are just around the corner
You know my travel policy: Get in the car and go. Just do it, alone or with someone, or even with a carload of friends and family. There is much to see and do not far from home, and other than the gas prices messing with our budgets, most travel is uplifting and therapeutic. >>

For one Toledoan, entertaining and volunteering are in the bag
You may think you have too many tote bags and purses, but in Jeanene Pifer's world there is never enough. Would you believe 600 and still counting - and shopping for more? The hundreds of people who have been the Toledoan's audiences believe it because they have seen 40 and more totes from her collection in her Toledo's Other Bag Lady shows. >>
