Jackpot for Ohio gambling in doubt
|
In Las Vegas, house prices have dropped 55 percent since peaking in August, 2006, and the foreclosure rate is seven times the national average. Gigantic new condo towers sit nearly empty — real-estate pros call them “see-through buildings” — and unemployment tops 13 percent. The recession has sent casino revenues plunging 20 percent from two years ago.

Renowned museum must remain distinctive
THOSE of us who work in art museums are surrounded every day by great examples of human achievement from virtually every period and culture on the planet. Over time, you might think that we would tire of these treasures and begin to take them for granted. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In era of equality there are plenty of 'manly men'
ONE of the things that people notice about me is my man's man aura. It would be boasting to suggest that people say I am ruggedly handsome but they do think I am ruggedly homely.

BEFORE Ohio voters cast their ballots for or against State Issue 2 on Nov. 3, they might find it useful to consider the views of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, representing more than 2,400 veterinarians.

The uneducated American
IF YOU had to explain America's economic success with one word, that word would be "education." In the 19th century, America led the way in universal basic education. Thanks to the people, Toledo's a great place to be

Health-care provider reform is also vital to the effort
THE battle of health-care reform rages on with no end in sight. The extraordinary amount of misinformation, scare tactics, lobbying influence, and congressional jockeying is an embarrassment to the American public.

Health care can't stand half-measures
OUR health-care system costs too much and we get too little. Our costs per person are twice those of most of our economic competitors and those costs are added to every product we try to sell in the world marketplace.

The state of U.S. health care demands change
OUR citizens are once again being bombarded with propaganda from the health-care industry. This historical discussion is at the point of a boil. The airwaves are filled with doubt and deception about "death panels" and government intervention - all designed to create confusion about which direction we should travel.

'Death panels' exist, and they’re run by health insurers
“DEATH panels”? I’ll tell you about death panels. My husband faced one some years ago, and it didn’t involve any government bureaucrat. It was run by our private insurer, the sort of corporate entity that foes of health-care reform say will give you anything you want.

Chabler confesses he was wrong about casinos
TO PARAPHRASE the 18th century English poet Alexander Pope, 'To err is human: To forgive is divine.' With that said, I would like to ask the forgiveness of those who took the time to read my May 30 article on this page supporting casinos in Ohio.

Extend concealed-carry to the Capitol
Isn't it time to dismantle the metal detectors, send the guards at the doors away, and allow Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights by being free to carry their firearms into the nation's Capitol building?
