Do-not-call registry made permanent by FCC

6/18/2008

WASHINGTON The Federal Communications Commission voted yesterday to require telemarketers to continue complying with the national do-not-call registry.

The vote puts into effect a law that made the five-year-old list permanent. It bars telemarketers from calling any registered number until a consumer removes it from the list or the number is reassigned to another phone customer.

Companies have paid more than $16 million in fines and repaid $8 million to consumers, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
