Ohio's jobless rate climbs to 10.9%

Ohio's unemployment rate jumped last month to 10.9 percent, as employment decreased and the number of jobless increased.

The state Department of Job and Family Services said Friday that job losses in service sector led to the increased in the unemployment rate from 10.6 in November. The rate was 7.4 percent in December, 2008.

Employment statewide dropped by 16,700 last month to 5.09 million. The number of unemployed was up by 17,000 from November to 641,000 and was up by 196,000 from a year ago.

The U.S. jobless rate last month was 10 percent, unchanged from November.

The rates for Ohio counties and cities for December will be released Tuesday.
