Meijer eludes charge on campaign finance laws

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The Grand Traverse County prosecutor has declined to charge Meijer Inc. employees and officers as part of an investigation into whether the retailer broke campaign finance laws.

Alan Schneider says he doesn’t have enough evidence to prove anyone at Meijer knowingly violated the law when the Grand Rapids firm secretly funded a 2007 bid to recall the Acme Township Board over a zoning dispute. Meijer had been arguing with local officials over plans for a store.
