AAA Mich. gets 2,200 help calls in 12-hour period

DEARBORN, Mich. — AAA Michigan says it has helped at least 2,200 motorists slammed by snow and low temperatures in a roughly 12-hour period.

Spokeswoman Nancy Cain said the statewide calls came between midnight Monday and just before noon today. The Dearborn-based auto club handled 5,800 calls during a 24-hour period Monday.

Problems include dead batteries, cars in ditches after slipping off roads, no gas and people locked out of vehicles. Cain says the majority of calls come from southeastern Michigan.

Steady snow and cold weather have kept AAA Michigan busy since New Year’s Day. She says average winter day brings in between 2,800 and 3,000 calls during a 24-hour period.

Cain says the all-time high during one day was 9,900 on Jan. 20, 1994, during a similar deep freeze.
