PARIS — The French digital privacy watchdog is fining Google Inc. $204,000 for breaking rules on ensuring data privacy.

The CNIL said on Wednesday that Google’s new privacy policy isn’t specific enough about how and why it collects data from users and doesn’t define how long it keeps it, among other problems. E.U. authorities also have said the new policy doesn’t follow their rules.

Google says its policy is compliant with European law.
