U.S. House OKs repeal of emission mandate
1/9/2014WASHINGTON — The U.S. House of Representatives has taken a step toward enabling automobile dealers to bypass a law requiring them to provide emissions certification on cars and light trucks, a rule that auto dealers say adds burdensome red tape to the buying process.
Lawmakers on Wednesday voted unanimously to repeal a 1977 mandate that ensures vehicles sold in the United States conform with the Clean Air Act.
The bill moves to the Senate, where it is expected to pass.
U.S. Rep. Bob Latta (R., Bowling Green) sponsored and introduced the legislation, saying that the requirement is an unnecessary burden on dealers and duplicates existing systems to ensure compliance with U.S. emissions standards. U.S. Reps. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) and Jim Jordan (R., Urbana, Ohio) both voted in favor of the bill.
