CANTON, Mich.  — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says the western suburb of Canton will receive one of two $70 million federal grants to boost innovation in manufacturing.

The grants going to programs in Chicago and Michigan are being discussed at a midday news conference in Chicago with U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. President Barack Obama plans to announce the initiative Tuesday.

The institutes are being seeded by $70 million each from the Department of Defense, plus more than $70 million each from non-government sources.

Duggan tells MLive.com that the nonprofit group Focus:Hope will run a lightweight metal innovation institute in Canton. He says he’s pleased “because it means Detroiters will be among the first in the world to develop the skills needed to manufacture these lightweight metals.”
