If you didn’t file a federal income tax return in 2010, the government says it might owe you some money.

The Internal Revenue Service says refunds totaling more than $24.5 million may be waiting for an estimated 32,100 Ohioans. And about 29,200 Michigan residents might be due $24.2 million in refunds.

To collect the money, taxpayers must file their 2010 tax returns by April 15.

The IRS says some people may not have filed because they did not have enough income in 2010 to require filing a tax return, even though they had taxes withheld from their paychecks or made quarterly estimated payments.

Federal law provides most taxpayers with a three-year window for claiming a refund. If no return is filed within three years, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury.

Nationwide, the IRS says it has $760 million in refunds owed to more than 918,000 people who did not file returns for 2010.

There is no penalty for filing a late return that qualifies for a refund. If it turns out you owe money, you will also owe interest on that amount.
