Gas prices jump in Toledo area

Many gas stations in the Toledo area early today were still charging $3.99 per gallon for regular unleaded gas, an increase that began at the start of Memorial Day weekend.
Gas prices in the Toledo area are currently about 30 cents higher than the national average and almost 30 cents higher than at the same time in Toledo in 2013, according to national statistics provided by AAA.
Many gas stations in the Toledo area early today were still charging $3.99 per gallon for regular unleaded gas, an increase that began at the start of Memorial Day weekend. The current average price in Toledo today is $3.872. Today’s national average is $3.661 per gallon, according to AAA.

Motorists in the state of Ohio on average are paying 20 cents more per gallon of gas today than the rest of the nation, said April Cochran, vice president, membership, marketing & public affairs for AAA Northwest, Ohio which is based in Toledo.
“We’re not really sure why this is,” said Ms. Cochran, referring to one state paying so much more than other states. “It’s very rare for it to happen.
“Historically we find that prices start to rise around Memorial Day. The answer is usually that there’s a higher demand.”
The highest recorded average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in the Toledo area was $4.167, which occurred on May 4, 2011.
Despite the climb, there were still some Toledo area gas stations today offering lower gas prices that might get motorists a little pumped.
Both Costco at 3425 W. Central Ave. in West Toledo and Sam’s Club, 1300 E. Mall Dr. in Holland were charging $3.59 per gallon early today.
Northwood’s Circle K, 4562 Woodville Rd. was selling regular unleaded gas for $3.67 per gallon at about 9:30 a.m., and Maumee’s Sunoco at 732 Conant St. was charging $3.69.
Several gas stations in Stoney Ridge: Love’s, TA Travel Center, Petro, Pilot, Fuel Mart and Flying J are all charging $3.68.
On Sunday - for the first time this year - consumers in three states paid $4 or more per gallon: Hawaii ($4.37), California ($4.12) and Alaska ($4.00).
