  • Dallas-based On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina won approval Thursday from the city to open its first metro Toledo location — and only its second in Ohio — on Monroe Street across from Franklin Park Mall.

The Toledo Plan Commission approved site plans Thursday for construction of the casual dining restaurant and bar at 5060 Monroe, where a Lone Star Steakhouse restaurant formerly stood.

Plans for building design, parking lot layout, lighting, and landscaping were approved with 40 conditions.

Daniel Smith, a company representative, said the chain’s menu features mesquite-grilled fajitas, hand-pressed enchiladas, chips and guacamole, and margaritas. The company has 128 restaurants in the United States, including one in Columbus.

Mr. Smith said the main entrance will be on Monroe with a secondary entrance from Talmadge Road. He estimated construction costs for the restaurant will be between $1 million and $1.5 million, and said the company hopes to open the restaurant by March.

In other action, the plan commission recommended approval for Dana Holding Corp.’s plans for a $14.5 million building expansion and parking lot at the Overland Industrial Park, 3044 Jeep Pkwy.

An existing 100,000-square-foot industrial building is to be expanded by nearly 200,000 square feet for a new Dana factory to supply axles for the new Jeep Wrangler.

The recommendation was forwarded to Toledo City Council’s planning and zoning committee for review.
