TARTA, Transit Windsor become `sister systems'

The Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority now has a transit “sister” in Canada

TARTA's board of trustees yesterday passed a resolution establishing a “sister system” relationship with Transit Windsor in southwestern Ontario, across the river from Detroit.

Richard Ruddell, the Toledo transit authority's general manager, said the Windsor agency adopted a companion resolution last month.

The arrangement, which Mr. Ruddell said is the first of its kind in the world, will enable the two transit systems to exchange information about management, operations, and other aspects of transit to their mutual benefit, Mr. Ruddell said.

He said he and several of his staff visited Windsor last month and expect several members of the Canadian agency's governing board to visit Toledo this spring. TARTA owns 171 general-service buses and serves Toledo and eight suburban communities, while Transit Windsor is about half TARTA's size and serves only the city of Windsor, he said.
