Man hospitalized after police chase

A man who authorities said suffered an apparent psychotic episode led law officers on a chase yesterday that began in Ottawa County's Carroll Township and ended 15 minutes later in East Toledo when a deputy shot out one of the man's car tires.

Vincent Bronowski, 52, of 620 Maumee Ave., was being treated last night in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. Charges against him are pending, authorities said.

The incident began about 11 a.m. on State Rt. 2, a mile west of the Davis-Besse nuclear power station, authorities said.

Mr. Bronowski, his wife Terri, 50, of the same address, and daughter, Laura Restivo, 30, of the 500 block of Louisiana Avenue, Perrysburg, were taking Mr. Bronowski to Toledo Hospital when he forced his daughter from the car and sped off at a high rate of speed, Ms. Restivo told authorities.

An alert was broadcast, and Lucas County sheriff's deputies began pursuing Mr. Bronowski's car when it entered their jurisdiction. The deputies reported that Mr. Bronowski reached speeds of 90 mph, sheriff's Lt. Don Atkinson said.

Mr. Bronowski threatened his wife with a knife as he drove, Lieutenant Atkinson said.

The pursuit went through Jerusalem Township and Oregon, where Mr. Bronowski's 1988 Ford struck a parked car at Wheeling Street and Navarre Avenue.

At Navarre and Dover Place in East Toledo, a deputy shot out the front tire on the driver's side of the car, and Mrs. Bronowski was able to flee. Mr. Bronowski turned right on Dover, drove about 50 yards, stopped, and surrendered, Lieutenant Atkinson said.
