Defiance schools to put levy on ballot for second time

8/20/2001

DEFIANCE -- The Defiance board of education is going to ask voters a second time to approve a 7.1-mill ballot issue, the same size request they defeated Aug. 7. But this time, the district will make the issue a five-year levy, instead of a permanent replacement levy.

The defeated levy was designed to offset an $894,000 budget deficit projected next year.

The issue was defeated 1,418 to 917, but Dr. Richard Motuelle, superintendent of Defiance schools, said the need for the money remains.

Dr. Motuelle said there is some expectation that state aid could be available to assist with school funding.

A mill is one dollar for every $1,000 of assessed valuation.
