Red Cross lauds work of many

The Greater Toledo Chapter of the American Red Cross has honored individuals and organizations from Lucas, Wood, and Ottawa counties for volunteer work and fund-raising.

The awards were presented last week during a luncheon.

“It's so important to recognize people for what they do,” Diane Dixon, chapter volunteer services manager, said. “They are our success in serving our community.”

Among those honored were:

Cumulus Broadcasting and WKKO-FM radio hosts Gary Shores and Harvey Steele, who shared the Outstanding Humanitarian Service Award for post-Sept. 11 fund-raising efforts.

Gladys Warner of Oak Harbor, a Red Cross volunteer since 1988, who received the Clara Barton Volunteer Leadership Award, the chapter's highest honor.

Bowling Green State University, which received the Good Neighbor Award for holding bloodmobiles and for fund-raising efforts BGSU groups have conducted since Sept. 11.

Bowling Green City Schools, which received the Philos Award honoring the spirit of charitable giving for pupil fund-raising since Sept. 11.

Julie Konrad of Milton Center, Ohio, who received the Disaster Services Volunteer Award for helping Wood County victims of fires and other disasters.

UAW Local 1892 at the Ford Motor Co. Maumee stamping plant, which received the Outstanding Labor Partnership Award.

Ernie Shiffler of Perrysburg, who received the Health and Safety Services Award for training others in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Citations for outstanding community commitment went to the Kroger Co. and the 180th Tactical Fighter Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard for providing volunteers and for St. Thomas More University Parish in Bowling Green for offering space to hold disaster services training classes after Sept. 11.
