TIFFIN — The state is suing the operators of a landfill over environmental and financial problems at the waste dump outside this northwest Ohio city.

Hocking Environmental Co., Kilbarger Construction Inc., and Daniel Stohs were named defendants in a Seneca County Common Pleas Court lawsuit filed last week by the Ohio attorney general's office.

The state claims that the defendants over the last three years have failed to pay some solid waste disposal fees and correct problems at the SanLan Landfill, including maintaining an adequate cover over the waste. The lawsuit asks a judge to force the defendants to correct the problems and pay $126,000 in late fees.

Officials have been worried about possible environmental problems at the landfill for years.
