LANCASTER, Ohio — A Blade senior writer and a retired Blade food editor claimed four awards from the annual writing contest of the Ohio Newspaper Women's Association.

Blade senior writer Judy Tarjanyi received a second place in the triple-entry category for newspapers with more than 75,000 circulation, a category in which entrants submit three different styles of writing to show versatility. Her entry included a profile of Toledo Bishop James Hoffman, an article about the recovery of a church communion rail from a local tavern, where it had been used at the bar, and a feature about a program called Rent a Priest.

Ms. Tarjanyi received a second-place in the specialty writing/news category for articles about religious license plates and about Muslims in politics. She received an honorable mention in the specialty writing/feature category for articles about Muslims and investing and about church sound systems.

Mary Alice Powell, a retired food editor whose writing continues to appear in The Blade, received an honorable mention in the triple-entry category for articles about her facelift, Kenya, and the collision of a Navy submarine and a Japanese fishing boat in Hawaii.
