Adrian College was founded in 1859 as a coeducational, independent, four-year college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Adrian awards bachelor's and associate's degrees in more than 40 majors. Enrollment is 1,100.

Bluffton College, 280 West College Ave., Bluffton; 419-358-3000.

On 65 acres about an hour south of Toledo, Bluffton offers 38 majors to its 1,050 students. Founded in 1899, Bluffton is affiliated with Mennonite Church USA.

Davis College, which dates to 1858, offers associate degrees in the traditional business, computer, medical, and design fields. The school has an enrollment of 450 students.

Defiance College is a four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ. It offers 40 undergraduate majors as well as a master of arts in education and master of business and organizational leadership.

Heidelberg College, 310 East Market St., Tiffin; 419-448-2330.

Heidelberg is a private coeducational liberal-arts school affiliated with the United Church of Christ. The college has 1,500 students. It offers master's degrees in counseling, education, and business administration.

Hillsdale College, 33 East College, Hillsdale, Mich.; 517-607-2327.

This four-year private liberal arts college offers undergraduate majors in the traditional liberal arts and sciences as well as business. Hillsdale is perhaps best known for its independence. It has not accepted government funding since the 1970s.

Lourdes College is an independent, coeducational four-year Catholic liberal-arts college sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis. Lourdes offers two and four-year degrees within the schools of arts and sciences, business, education, and nursing and allied health. Master's degree programs in business and education are planned in September, 2002. Enrollment is 1,400.

Founded in 1971, Lima Tech is spread over seven buildings on a 565-acre campus that is shared with Ohio State University at Lima. Lima Tech offers associate degrees to 2,800 students. There are more than 70 majors and certificate programs in four divisions.

Tuition: Ranges between $6,803 and $16,187, depending on program and year. President: Dr. Frank McCullough.

Mercy College of Northwest Ohio, 2221 Madison Ave., Toledo; 419-251-1313.

Founded in 1917 as a nursing school, Mercy College of Northwest Ohio specializes in health-care education. The private, nonprofit school part of the Mercy Health Partners system and offers five associate degrees in addition to a bachelor's degree in nursing. Enrollment is 298.

With an enrollment of 3,649 students, MCCC has two campuses and offers more than 35 career programs and comprehensive transfer curriculums.

Northwest, which became a community college in 1994, offers associate degree programs in a number of fields, including accounting, business management, and computer programming. Northwest State has 3,000 students.

Ohio Northern University has 3,200 students enrolled in its colleges of arts and sciences, business administration, engineering, pharmacy, and law. Founded in 1871, ONU is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

Tuition: $22,000. President: Dr. Kendall Baker.

More than 17,000 students are enrolled in the Toledo-area and Findlay campuses of Owens Community College, where students choose from more than 100 career-oriented programs and majors in agriculture, business, health, public service, industrial, and engineering technologies.

Students can earn the first two years of a bachelor's degree at Owens, then transfer to a four-year institution as a junior. The college has articulation agreements with every college and university in northwest Ohio.

Siena Heights University is a Catholic coeducational university founded in the liberal-arts tradition in 1919 by the Adrian Dominican Congregation. The university awards associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees at its 140-acre residential main campus in Adrian. Enrollment for the entire university is 1,168.

Spring Arbor University near Jackson, Mich., has a satellite campus with over 200 students near Toledo. The private, Christian liberal-arts school offers accelerated bachelor's degrees in four programs and master's degrees in education, organizational development, and counseling

Terra Community College, founded in 1968 as Vanguard Technical Institute, became a community college in 1994. It has 2,500 students, many of whom take their first two years at Terra, then transfer to a four-year institution.

Established in 1888, Tiffin University has an enrollment of 1,578 students in five schools: graduate studies, business, criminal justice, arts and sciences, and off-campus learning.

The University of Findlay has 4,586 students who choose from 63 undergraduate majors and seven master's degree programs, including business administration and education.

The University of Northwestern Ohio has 2,450 students and awards associate degrees in 23 areas. It has bachelor's degree programs in four areas.
