Anthony Wayne recreation district plans 2 tax issues

A group trying to create a 204-acre recreational complex for Whitehouse and Waterville-area residents has approved measures that will ask voters in November to finance and operate it.

In a 9-0 vote, the Anthony Wayne Area Joint Recreation District last night decided on two tax increases for which it will request approval, said Par Ricketts, vice chairman of the recreation district.

One proposal is a 0.4-mill continuing operating levy that would raise $231,253 a year. The other is a 0.58-mill levy that would generate $5 million over 25 years for construction costs.

The complex, most of which would be in Whitehouse near Schadel and Stiles roads, would include 12 soccer fields, 13 baseball fields, four football fields, a walking/jogging trail, and parking facilities.

Board members have estimated the levies would cost the owner of a $100,000 house about $31 a year. A mill is one dollar for every $1,000 of assessed valuation.
