Texas' Tubb takes record 10th high-power rifle title
8/15/2002G. David Tubb of Canadian, Texas, has fired his way to an unprecedented 10th title as national high-power rifle champion in the National Rifle and Pistol Matches at Camp Perry.
Tubb compiled a multiple-match score of 2365-121X to outpoint Mitchell Maxberry of Philpot, Ky., who fired an aggregate of 2352-94X. The X-score refers to the number of perfect center-shot bull's-eyes and is used to break numerical ties.
Tubb was billed as the rifleman to beat in the high-power championships, the last phase of the National Rifle and Pistol Matches. The five-week shooting competition ended yesterday with the conclusion of a long-range rifle school.
The Texan, who represents the second of three generations of national championship riflemen, is considered the most successful rifle marksman in U.S. history. In addition to his high-power titles and many match championships that go with them, he also is a former smallbore [.22] rifle junior champion.
His father, George Tubb, was a nationally ranked high-power competitor and his mother was an NRA women's high-power champion. His son, Taylor, already has several junior victories to his credit.
Tubb last won the high-power championship just a year ago with an aggregate of 2380-112X. The high-power championship consists of three 200-point matches a day for four days.
Some 4,300 competitors went to the firing lines overall.

The Ohio squirrel hunting season, the first of the 2002-2003 seasons, opens Saturday with predictions for very productive hunting statewide.
“The high squirrel population in 2001, coupled with an average to good mast [food] crop and mild winter, should result in excellent hunting throughout Ohio again this season,” said Mike Reynolds, a biologist with the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
For the first time, hunters will be able to bag up to six squirrels a day. The season continues daily through Jan. 31, except during the week of gun-deer season in the first week of December.

A lottery to hunt geese at Maumee Bay State Park is set for Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. in the park office.
The hunts are scheduled for the early Canada goose season. The 18 lottery winners will each be assigned one of six locations on the park's golf course, or allowed to erect their own portable blinds, for Sept. 3, 4, or 5. Two hunters, a permit-holder and a partner, will be allowed per blind each of the three hunt-days. Hunting hours will be sunrise to 10 a.m. only.
To enter the lottery, send a postcard addressed to Special Goose Hunt, 1400 State Park Rd., Oregon, Ohio 43618. Include name, address, and phone number, along with partner's name.
Each lottery winner may bring a hunting partner. Only one postcard is allowed per applicant. Permits are not transferable. Postcards may be hand-delivered, and applicants need not be present. Winners will be notified by phone.

Dick Shaffer of Celina, Ohio led 108 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League competitors Saturday on Lake Erie with five bass weighing 22 pounds, 12 ounces to win $3,228 in the circuit's boater division.
Shaffer caught a tourney limit using a tube jig in 12 to 18-foot depths. Roy Pifer, also of Celina, earned big-bass honors with a 5-pound, 4-ounce fish taken on a tube. Daniel Carter of Van Wert, Ohio finished first in the co-angler division, winning $1,614 for five bass weighing 20 pounds, 12 ounces.
The Wal-Mart league moves to the Ohio River Sept. 7-8 for the Buckeye Division's finals.
