Application review begins next week for Perrysburg Twp. administrator

Perrysburg Township trustees expect to review resumes next week for their newly created administrator position, and hope to have someone on the job by January.

The application cut-off was Tuesday. Resumes submitted have been sealed in the township office. Trustees might discuss them during their department heads meeting on Oct. 16.

Optimistically, trustees would like to see an administrator in place by the start of 2003, or sooner if they can find the right candidate who is “ready to go,” said Trustee Bob Mack.

Trustee Barbara Gunn said she was hoping to have a new administrator hired by November, but she's not sure if that goal can be reached.

Resumes will be reviewed, interviews conducted, and discussions held before a decision is made, she said, a process that could take longer than a few weeks.

Creating the administrator's position often has been discussed in recent years.

Mr. Mack pointed out that when he campaigned last year - he was elected in the November election - he told voters that the township needed to hire an administrator. Mrs. Gunn, who also was elected last November, several months ago recommended hiring an administrator.

“Our budget is so large. We have lots of employees,” said Mr. Mack. “We need a chief financial officer; we need a director of human resources for the township, and we need a controller.”

Trustees have set aside $60,000 in next year's budget for the administrator's position, said Mrs. Gunn, noting that some townships in the state pay between $50,000 to $100,000 for administrators' wages.

In this area, townships with administrators include Springfield, Sylvania, and Monclova.

Springfield Township, with a population of 24,123 according to the 2000 census, hired its first administrator in 1994. Sylvania Township, with a population of 44,253, has had an administrator on board since May 1, 1998, and Monclova Township, which has a population of 6,767, hired its first administrator in spring, 2001.

The 2003 budget in Perrysburg Township, which had a population of 13,613 in the 2000 census, calls for $9.6 million in estimated expenditures and $5.2 million in estimated revenue from property taxes, ambulance runs, zoning permits, interest on investments, and other sources. The township reserves stand at about $10 million.
